Review: Intel's Xeon W5580 Processors
Written by Review Hunter
Apr 01, 2009 at 12:09 AM
Intel's potent Core microarchitecture has given it a lead in the majority of performance tests, Xeons have been somewhat hamstrung on two fronts: on the power-efficiency front by their prevailing use FB-DIMM type memory, and on the scalability front by the use of a front-side bus and a centralized memory controller.

Those barriers for the Xeon are about to be swept away by today's introduction of new processors based on the chip code-named Nehalem, a new CPU design that brings with it a revised system architecture that will look very familiar to folks who know the Opteron.

Preview: Radeon HD4890 tested!
Written by FC
Mar 25, 2009 at 12:05 AM
In precision the HD 4890 could be run with 1000/1125 MHz instead of 850/975 MHz and reached an immense 3DMark Vantage score of X5480 points. The 18 per cent frequency increase in the chip and the 15 per cent increase in the memory was accomplished by the usual air cooling, while it was clearly visible with the driver menu that it rotated at full speed in 3D mode. The 3DMark Vantage-Score lays between GTX 280 and GTX 285 - an accurate comparison is difficult, because the CPU performance is also involved in the result.

News: Radeon 4750 (40nm) in price list
Contributed by Voltron
Mar 24, 2009 at 11:55 PM
Reportedly, the Radeon HD 4750 features a 650MHz GPU with 640 stream processors. The card is outfitted with 512MB of GDDR5 memory clocked at 800MHz (for an effective 3200MT/s transfer rate), and it has a 128-bit memory interface. If my math is right, that means the card should have peak theoretical memory bandwidth of 51.2GB/s-not far below the 57.6GB/s of the Radeon HD 4830.

News: Are the New 17-Inch MacBook Pros Plagued by Faulty Graphics Cards?
Written by FC
Mar 08, 2009 at 11:25 PM
This is actually the third run of MacBook Pros to be allegedly affected by defective Nvidia graphics cards with heat problems: The previous generation was packed with Nvidia cards that Apple determined were suffering from its notorious material defect that caused cards to fail at a "higher-than-normal" rates. The current generation of 15-inch MacBook Pros also had video problems (the ominous "black screen of death") which Apple also acknowledged, though no definitive blame was ever placed on faulty cards. (Although the Inquirer will readily tell you the cards are in fact, defective.)

If you installed Vista or even later versions of XP from a DVD you know that it was very time consuming. Why not speed up the process by using a flash drive to install Windows 7. Windows 7 is currently in beta and Microsoft is offering it free to anyone to try out until August. In this article we will show you how to take the Windows 7 ISO and put it on a USB flash drive for fast and easy installation.

News: Microsoft to open own stores, take on rival Apple
Contributed by Voltron
Feb 15, 2009 at 11:52 PM
Microsoft announced plans Thursday to open its own chain of branded stores as it looks to catch up with rival Apple's successful move into retailing. The world's largest software company, which also makes the Xbox video game console and the Zune digital music player, did not say how many stores it was looking to open, or when, or which of its products would be on sale.

That is to be decided by David Porter, a former DreamWorks Animation executive, which Microsoft named as its new vice president of retail stores. Turner, a former Wal-Mart Stores manager, will report to Microsoft chief operating officer Kevin Turner.
